Help Holly Fight Stage 4 Cancer
Spende geschützt
Hello. I am fundraising for myself, a 58 year old divorced woman with no children and few family members remaining (almost all unable to assist me financially). I was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in May 2021. I went through many tests over several months to get a diagnosis of what was wrong with me after not feeling well for 6 months to a year and ending up in the ER February 20, 2021. After months of waiting (due to Covid backlogs) I finally received a referral to a gastroenterologist who ordered an upper scope and a colonoscopy (which took until May 11, 2021 to schedule). Expecting to hear I had stomach issues of some kind, I instead awoke from anesthesia to be told that they had found a suspected cancerous tumor in my rectum and that biopsies were taken and further testing (CT scans) were needed if the biopsy showed cancer. It did show cancer and CT scans were eventually scheduled. The scans of my pelvis, abdomen, and chest showed that the cancer had spread to my pelvic lymph nodes, abdominal lymph nodes, and lungs making it a stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
I spent most of my savings on copays for multiple months of testing to get a diagnosis and am lucky to be being treated at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, but have extremely limited funds to cover living expenses and copays as I have been unable to work. Social Security sent a letter at the end of August stating the stage of my cancer was “unknown” and that I was not considered disabled. I am currently appealing that decision with legal help. Previously slated to run out of funds by October 2021, your donations will help me stay up to date on monthly expenses (rent, health insurance, etc.) until almost the end of January 2022.
I did receive word Thanksgiving week that I have been approved to receive financial assistance with my medical expenses at the hospital where I receive treatment. I’m not quite sure how much I may still be responsible for, but will be making a call this week. I am so grateful.
I have been reluctant to ask for help, but have no other choice. I am in danger of losing my housing and medical coverage. My 11th cycle of Chemotherapy begins December 2, 2021 with no coverage for deductibles. I am expected to need many cycles of Chemotherapy (probably for the rest of my life) as well as possible surgery and radiation after chemo. I am currently weakened by the 10 chemo treatments I have received so far with each treatment causing more weakness, fatigue, falls, loss of appetite, and weight loss. But I fight on and need your help.
Please know any amount donated is much appreciated. Also sharing this GoFundMe with others, whether you can or cannot afford to donate, would be extremely helpful.
As a single person fighting this battle on my own with extremely limited finances, I am now forced to deal not only with stage 4 cancer, but with the ongoing and immediate threat of not being able to support myself from month to month or cover my medical premiums and copays. I am hoping for a different outcome through an my appeal to Social Security which is in process.
Thank you for reading my Go FundMe request, sharing my story on your social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.), and donating if possible. I am so grateful for any and all support you can provide. I never thought life would hand me a curveball like this, but here I am.
With much gratitude,
Holly Hartshorn
