Help Holden Stavney

We are grateful. For the prayers, energy, and support we’ve received from so many people since Holden first became terribly sick in December 2020. When someone is gravely ill, the words and messages of friends and family provide the strength for those directly involved to carry on. We cannot convey how much our community means to us and how much being there for us has pulled us through some rough times.

What happened? Holden contracted Covid at CSU in September 2020 without any serious symptoms to start. Within weeks he started bleeding in his GI tract, was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in October, and in a Ft. Collins cardiac ward for three days with Myocarditis in December. We moved him back home Christmas week.

His condition worsened and Holden spent 25 days in Valley View Hospital in January. He lost 50ish pounds (165 down to 117) and was extremely anemic. After 10 plus blood transfusions, many more iron transfusions, months on steroids and biologic medicines, he’s regained weight and been able to do some of the things he loves most: fish, mountain bike, and hike.

What’s happening now? Holden has developed cataracts from the steroids needed to control the inflammatory conditions he’s coping with. Most of you likely don’t know that Holden is legally blind in his right eye from a forceps injury at delivery. Due to this, his one good is even more precious as his only option for seeing. In addition, his UC symptoms are coming back as he gets off the steroids. We’re consulting Mayo Clinic on next steps for medical treatment. His battle with post-Covid conditions is not over.

What does Holden need? First, he needs everyone’s prayers and support for a safe and successful cataract surgery on August 6. We’re grateful to have an excellent surgeon and a procedure that is routine. Second, Holden could use your financial support as he returns to Ft. Collins. He’s been unable to go to school or work since this started. We’re transferring his medical treatment to UC Health in Denver with consultation from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester as well. Medical bills are starting to mount.

We’ve been reluctant to post the details of his condition as well as ask for financial support. Holden has demonstrated the most amazing gratitude throughout this ordeal helping him to withstand horrible suffering and still be able to laugh and see a bright future. The last few years of the pandemic have been a trial of varying degrees for all of us. We hope to give Holden a boost as he returns to life on campus this semester.

Thank you so much for your consideration.
