Help Hoku Rebuild After Devastating Theft

Aloha, my name is Hoku.

Recently, I visited the sacred ʻĪao Valley—one of Maui’s most revered and powerful places of healing. I went to pray, to reconnect with the ‘āina, and to find some peace. But when I returned, my car was gone.

Inside that vehicle was everything I owned.

My phone, my wallet, my glasses. My shoes. My sacred musical instruments—flutes, drums, and other ceremonial tools I use in healing work and music. My massage table. My bedding, altar items, clothing, crystals, and suitcases. All gone.

You see, I was living in that vehicle, not out of choice, but because I was displaced after the Maui wildfires. Like many others, I lost my job due to the economic fallout, and shortly after, my landlord kicked me out. Many landlords on the island chose to evict tenants to try to capitalize on FEMA handout money—leaving countless locals suddenly homeless and jobless.

Despite that heartbreak, I held onto faith. I made my car into a sacred little space—a place to sleep, create, and heal. I was slowly rebuilding. Until this happened.

Now I feel like I’ve lost everything. Over $30,000 USD in essential items vanished in a moment. But more than the monetary value, it was the loss of my voice, my way of life, and my ability to serve others through my work with music, massage, and plant medicine that hurts the most.

It feels like my heart has been ripped out, my wings clipped. But I refuse to give up.
