Before the end of 2021, my mom underwent surgery and had to stay in the ICU for a month for further observation. Unfortunately, she was briefly discharged and was rushed back to the ER due to an infection from surgery. The disease weakened her system and started to decline rapidly, and she had to be intubated with multiple medications. On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, I was called by the department to visit immediately and was informed that her condition wasn't getting any better. The doctor had told me that her system was unresponsive to her medications and suggested she start comfort care and let her pass on naturally. 

She has fought a long-lasting battle with her illness for more than ten years. Her strong will to live and optimism kept her alive for the remaining years. But unfortunately, good things have come to an end. Her recent passing has been challenging for our family, and I want nothing but fulfilling her biggest wish, to be home in the Philippines with her family. Still, due to the financial issues caused by the pandemic and other issues, I fear I won’t be able to bring her ashes back home. My dad had to be unemployed for some time now and devoted his time to being a full-time caregiver since she had to go through dialysis multiple days a week. She was too weak to do any simple chores, and my dad and I had to take over everything. And since I’m the only one working, I struggle to support my family financially, and it’s not enough or close to enough to pay our monthly bills and to be able to grant her final wish.
