Not long ago, lessons at Hibaaq School—the first school in the village of Habaaswayn in the Odweyne region—began under a tree. Children and teachers gathered in the open air, bravely facing rain and blazing sun, in conditions that were unsafe and made learning difficult. Through the determination of the community and the support of Save My Children, two simple classrooms were built, providing furniture, electricity, and a well—a sanctuary where children can learn with dignity and safety.

Now, 75 students attend Hibaaq School five days a week, with younger grades learning in the morning and older grades in the afternoon. This shared space stretches every resource to reach every child. Our urgent goal is to fund a full year of fair wages for two qualified teachers and strengthen day‑to‑day learning—keeping the doors open, the lights on, and hope alive. After the first year’s progress, it is anticipated that Hibaaq School will be assumed into the Somaliland Educational System—a vital step toward long‑term sustainability.

The school’s name, Hibaaq, means “a flower from heaven,” a symbol of grace taking root in this village. It also honours a remarkable Somali‑American woman, Hibaaq, whose vision and steadfast support helped turn an outdoor learning space into a real school.
