Dear family & friends,
I'm reaching out to share a significant update in my journey. In 2022, at the age of 28, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, a diagnosis that has profoundly altered my life and that of my family.
My experience has highlighted a crucial need for greater awareness and education within the healthcare system regarding cancer in young adults. Regrettably, I found myself failed by a system that dismissed my symptoms due to my age, resulting in delayed testing and misdiagnosis. I'm committed to advocating for change so that others don't face similar challenges. Together, we can push for better research, more proactive screening, and improved support for young adults facing cancer.
As I share this update, I'm currently grappling with stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized to my lungs and brain. Recently, I underwent brain surgery, followed by the discovery of additional tumors requiring radiation treatment. However, complications arose due to my tissue expander, necessitating further surgeries. These challenges have taken a toll on both my physical and emotional well-being.
One of the most difficult aspects of this journey has been the loss of my sense of womanhood. The physical changes resulting from surgeries and treatments have left me feeling disconnected from my body and struggling with depression. I mourn the loss of my ability to breastfeed and the changes to my appearance that have impacted my self-esteem.
Compounding these challenges are the financial burdens faced by my partner, who has become my primary caregiver while juggling work responsibilities. His unwavering support has been a source of strength, but the strain on both of us is palpable. We are immensely grateful for any assistance that can alleviate the financial strain of medical expenses, travel, and daily living costs.
Despite the hardships, we remain hopeful and resilient, buoyed by the love and support of our community. Your prayers, well wishes, and generosity mean the world to us as we navigate this difficult journey. We are deeply touched by your kindness and humbled by your willingness to stand by our side.
All prayers and monetary support are greatly appreciated. Other methods of contributions can be sent through Venmo @maitaxiong3 or PayPal @maitaxiong
Thank you for being a part of our support network and for helping us through this challenging time. Your compassion and generosity give us hope and strength to continue fighting. May God blessed you all with health, love, and peace.
With love, Mai Ta, Ger, and family.
