“I just can’t do this anymore”
“It feels like the darkness will never end”
“I don’t feel like my life has meaning”
These thoughts and so many more are common to those of us who struggle with mental illness. Maybe you’ve experienced these thoughts yourself, or maybe you know someone who has. Either way, it is not difficult to see how all-consuming these thoughts can be, and how important it is to seek help when the light at the end of the tunnel seems too far away to reach on your own.
A friend once described depression to me using the analogy of a pit. Sometimes we fall into small pits of sadness. These pits are shallow enough for us to get out of on our own. Other times, we fall into a deep pit of depression. In these cases, we usually have fallen much too deep to ever make it out of the pit on our own. Without the help of others, we can quickly become overpowered by feelings of hopelessness and isolation. This is why we have mental health professionals and treatment facilities. These resources act as embodiments of ladders leading out of the pit, lanterns lighting our way, and a steady hand to hold when it all feels like too much.
A 2017 study found that an estimated 17.3 million adults in the US had at least one major depressive episode in that year alone. These numbers continue to rise as the COVID-19 pandemic impacts our sense of normalcy, community, and stability. Depression does not discriminate – it impacts those of all socioeconomic status, gender, age, race, etc. And when the depths of depression hit, it is important to seek help.
A young woman in our community has been living with depression for many years with no relief. Over the past few weeks, she has decided to pursue help in the form of a residential faith based treatment facility in Florida. However, the cost of treatment is not cheap, and she needs not just emotional support, but financial support.
We can’t always climb out of the pit on our own. We are asking for your support as we raise the funds to get our friend the treatment she needs and deserves.
Please donate what you can to support a loved one of our community. Be a light in her darkness and help her fight this battle, Thank you!
