My good friend Henk Schuitemaker is known by many as a true animal lover. His property in Knightdale is home to a variety of animals—birds like chickens and pigeons, dogs, cats, a lovely donkey, and now seven horses. What started as a kind gesture to rescue two horses a couple of years ago has grown into a full-blown rescue operation. Henk’s latest addition is a rare 23-year-old Arabian horse with a tragic history, having been starved three times over his life. Thankfully, he has now found a safe and loving home with Henk.

Running this rescue has become a wildly expensive venture. While Henk pursues his 501(c)3 charitable status, I decided to set up this GoFundMe to help with the costs of feed and care. All donations will go directly to Henk and will be used for animal feed, veterinary care—many of these beautiful creatures arrive in seriously bad shape and require intensive care—shelter improvements, and continuing to save more animals. Your support will help Henk provide a safe haven for animals in need and give them a second chance at life.

I am aware these are economically difficult times for many, so anything you are able to offer would be greatly appreciated, even if it is simply sharing Henk’s story with your friends, animal lovers, and possible donors. Henk is an amazing, kind, and generous person who is hesitant to ask for help. As I witness him struggle to maintain and keep these beautiful creatures healthy and comfortable, I felt compelled to get the ball rolling to assist while he works on his charitable status.
