My mum, Henia, has to fight against awful brain cancer – stage 4 Glioblastoma wild-type (GBM). An aggressive form of brain cancer.
Our history is a little bit more complicated.
2010 we lost our beloved Dad after 7 years fight against Myeloma Multiplex, an aggressive form of bone marrow cancer. Our family life was stable until December 2023.
Mum decided to finally retire in 2024 at the age of 68. Unfortunately, unexpected things happened and life just laughed at us. “no one expected the Spanish inquisition”.
It was on Friday 15/12/2023, Mum went to work as usual and all of a sudden collapsed. Thankfully, that happened at work thus her colleagues called for an ambulance and she was taken to the hospital. After a few days and a CT and MRI scan, we got a diagnosis of brain cancer. The suggestions were about the worst type of GBM. All of a sudden our life was turned upside down again. The strong flashback came to me and my brother so we started searching for the best treatment for Mum.
After many delays Mum finally had her craniotomy done at the beginning of July 2024 in the hospital in Warsaw. About 70% of the tumour was removed. When we got the histopathology results our world was ruined again. Stage 4 Glioblastoma wild type sounded like a death sentence. We wanted to fight and not easily give up.
Mum completed radiotherapy and now she is taking chemotherapy in the cycle of 5/23 in the best oncology hospital in Poland in Bydgoszcz.
The latest MRI (from mid-December 2024) showed that we do not have any new growth at the moment and compared to the MRI just before radio and chemotherapy, the tumour has shrunk. That was very optimistic news we have got on 02/01/2025.
Unfortunately when one thing is positive the other one is not. Mum spent a week in the hospital in December 2024 after having severe multiply seizures. Since then she stopped walking and week by week she is fading.
At the moment, Mum needs help with very simple tasks and exercises and is spending most of her time in bed. It is devasting to see her in that condition.
My Mum has had so many plans for her retirement and at the moment she is a prisoner in her own bed. We want her to go out again and enjoy life as much as possible as we know that we do not have much time to spend together.
With my brother, we did everything we could at home. Due to her current condition, we decided to organise Mum a special care and physiotherapy in a dedicated hospital. Unfortunately, the monthly cost is about 20000 Polish zloty which is about £4000. The place we have found for her is the best physiotherapy hospital in Poland and they specialise in neurological physiotherapy.
That’s why I kindly ask for your help for her physiotherapy and further battle against this awful cancer.
We will use the money to pay for her physiotherapy as we already know that she will need at least 3-4 months there. The rest of the money we will use for further treatment. There are some promising new methods like Optune or targeted therapy which are not available in Poland but we are ready to do everything. We would like her to enjoy her retirement life as she deserves it!!
