Hello, my name is Aaron Mike. I’m currently a sophomore at Northern Arizona University, majoring in exercise physiology. I have dreamed of attending the Olympics since I was a child. Recently i’ve been granted the opportunity to attend the event in Paris this summer for an internship that is provided by a study abroad program known as API (Academic Programs International) for the sports management program. Thus, I have created this fundraiser as a means to make my dream come true. This opportunity would not only fulfill a life long dream for me, but also provide insight into the professional and business side of athletics which would help me tremendously in my career. Growing up on the Navajo Nation, a Native American reservation located throughout the southwest region of the US, I’ve noticed the many disparities between my community and those off the reservation.
This issue is particularly apparent when it comes to athletics, many young Navajo people dream of becoming professional athletes, however the resources simply aren’t there. Thus, as a Native person I hope to provide representation through this internship and keep the Olympic dream alive for the next generation. My passion for running and athletics stemmed from harsh experiences I faced growing up on the reservation. My family, teachers, and coaches have all inspired me to continue my dream of combining my passion for athletics with education.
In short, this internship will allow me to continue building the foundation for a career and serve as a testimony to the adversity I have overcome to succeed and carve a space in athletics for young Native people like myself. I hope to use this experience as a way to give back to my community and show what can be done through hard work and dedication. All funds will go to the cost of the program along with any trip expenses. Any donations no matter the amount are greatly appreciated. Thank you
