Help Helena Tomas "do the incredible"
Helena Tomas will be well known to many who have journeyed with Peter Sommer Travels. She is a working archaeologist, Bronze Age specialist, and an expert in ancient languages. (She has done ground-breaking work in deciphering Linear B and is hoping to be the first to decipher Linear A – one of Europe’s most ancient scripts). www.ideacity.ca/speaker/helena-tomas. In her capacity as Professor and Head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and in her fieldwork, she has made many important discoveries.
Helena’s academic honours include a D.Phil from the University of Oxford and she has been granted multiple fellowships in the US, Germany and Greece. She is also a recipient of the Michael Ventris Memorial Award from the University of London.
In recent years, Helena also enjoyed her summers working as a specialist guide on archaeological tours in Croatia and Greece with Peter Sommer Travels, as well as on her own ongoing archaeological digs. She has shared not only her vast knowledge of her subject, but also her warm, enthusiastic and fun-loving approach to it, engaging everyone who has had the privilege of travelling with her.
In 2019, at the age of 43, and at the height of her academic career, Helena suffered a life-threatening aneurism followed by two strokes, all resulting in substantial physical difficulties. She has since undergone extensive surgery (including a recent twelve-hour operation to repair two further aneurysms), and intense ongoing rehabilitation. All this has been at enormous financial cost. With her customary zest for life, Helena is determined to make a full recovery, resume her attempt to crack the code of Linear A, and get back in the field. Achieving this, however, will require substantial financial resources - resources that are a serious challenge for her and her family. The focus of this fundraiser is to assist Helena by helping to provide funding for her ongoing physiotherapy and to meet the cost of further medical treatment.
