This is for our mother, Heidi, aged 63. She has been fighting for her life since August 27th after becoming critically ill with what was later discovered to be West Nile encephalitis, a rare and life-threatening complication of the virus, which is spread to humans by mosquito bites. According to the CDC, fewer than 1% of those infected develop severe neurological illness such as encephalitis or meningitis.
After being admitted to the ER in her hometown of Brainerd, Minnesota with a near 105 fever, Heidi was intubated and airlifted to Duluth, Minnesota, for specialized care. She has remained in the ICU for several weeks, and has been unable to move, speak, eat, or make her basic needs known. This is absolutely heartbreaking for all of her family and friends to see.
Heidi has 3 adult children including a daughter and two sons. She has two grandchildren, ages 10 and 11. She also has a German Shepherd, Ringo, who very dearly misses her every day and has not been the same since she left.
At home, she loves gardening, tending to her chickens and bees, and just enjoying the simple things in life. All of her family, friends, and pets hope to see her get back on her feet to experience these joys again.
Her recovery and hospital stay will take months. She is making progress each day. The cost of her care and rehabilitation is overwhelming, and any support will help give Heidi the chance to return home to the family who loves her deeply. And to her dog Ringo, who patiently waits at the door for her every day.
Please consider donating or sharing her story, and help to raise awareness about West Nile virus. This is something no one could ever expect to happen to a loved one or friend, and it has forever changed Heidi’s life and those close to her. Thank you so much for your support.
