On Christmas Eve, while my mother was visiting me and her grandchildren, her home was tragically destroyed in a fire. She lost everything in a matter of minutes—her clothing, essential needs, medications, and even the safe space she shared with her beloved dog, Winston. The fire left nothing untouched; from the ceiling to the baseboards, everything was either completely gone or damaged beyond repair by smoke and flames.

My mother has always been the backbone of our family. For over 30 years, she dedicated her life to caring for others as a nurse, offering compassion and support to those in need. About four years ago, she faced her own health complications and has since been out of work, surviving on social security. During that time, my siblings and I did our best to hold things together for her, just as she always did for us.
