Hello, my Name is Sam Baker and I live in Tahoe with my wife Heather my two sons Brady and Gino, and my daughter Kalika. My wife Heather was diagnosed with a rare disease called Machado Joseph Disease about 11 years ago. It is spinocerebellar ataxia and it is progressive. She has not been able to ride a bike for quite a long time now. She was my riding partner. I used to buy her mountain bike parts for her birthday. She still gives me shit for that. She has to use a walker so she can’t hike out on the trails either. She doesn’t drive anymore. She has double vision. Our favorite thing to do was to get out in the woods either hiking or mountain biking. She misses doing that so much. She needs to do something. I was checking out recumbent trikes and wondering if that would be something she could get into. I found out that the city of Reno has an adaptive equipment rental program. It doesn’t cost much at all. They rent a trike called the “Ice Full Fat Off-Road Recumbent Trike”. It has a pedal-assist option which she needs because she has atrophy in her cerebellum which affects the strength of her muscles. We rented it for three days. Oh Man, this trike is cool. It has 4-inch tires and 14 speeds. We went out on the trail every day. I haven’t seen Heather smile so much in a long time. She said, “It doesn’t feel like anything is wrong with me”. She can ride it on the snow too. I didn’t realize that this trike would cost so much. She needs the special hub so she can shift without pedaling or getting off the trike and the pedal assist. We decided to throw caution to the wind and finance it we have 18 months to pay it back.
