Help Open the Unbound Writing Center in Arcata!
Hi, my name is Heather and I'm fundraising for startup costs with my new business, the Unbound Writing Center. I'm a middle school teacher, a lifelong writer, and a lover of Humboldt County's creative community.
The Unbound Writing Center's mission is to uplift and amplify Humboldt voices while helping people find freedom of expression through writing. The money raised here will go towards purchasing local writers' books to sell at the center and also to employ them as guest lecturers for specialized writing workshops. Per capita, Humboldt is one of the most artistic places in the state and significant support for the visual and performing arts already exists but there is not as much support for writers. The Unbound Writing Center is on a mission to change that!
I started Unbound because I love the literary arts and initially wanted to support my own journey in finding writing contests, open mics, and other literary opportunities in our community. It felt like I could never find them until after they had happened! So, I started making a calendar for myself and thought, "Hey, other people could benefit from this too!" I published a calendar at UnboundWritingCenter.com and the vision kept growing.
What began as an online community through Instagram (@unboundwritingcenter) grew quickly into live writing sessions via virtual workshops and writing groups. It became clear people in Humboldt needed a physical location (and a consistent cheerleader!) to support their literary needs while also inspiring and exciting them to write. Enter: Unbound.
The physical location in Arcata's Sunny Brae Shopping Center (Unit #56) is be a space for teens to have creative and constructive outlets (through a Teen Zine Team and writing workshops to help with college essay applications, for example) and hosts workshops for adults who are curious and passionate about writing! It also has a storefront treasure trove of writing supplies and accessories to inspire and excite writers of all ages. Open Fridays & Saturdays 11-5 and by appointment!
