Heather, my blue and gold Macaw, has been my companion for many years. She’s around 25-30 years old and has traveled with me on countless adventures. Recently, after a routine trip to town, I noticed her right wing was hanging down in a way I’d never seen before. I was terrified and rushed her to the nearest animal hospital, where they discovered her wing was broken. The staff had to put her under to take x-rays, and hearing her squawk in pain was heartbreaking. They referred me to a specialist at Arizona Exotic Pets in Phoenix, which is 100 miles away.

I got Heather to the specialist as soon as possible. The vet took more images and wrapped her wing to stabilize it. The x-ray showed a break at the elbow, and the vet told me that surgery was the best option. By pinning the wing, Heather would be out of pain, and we could save her wing so it would be operational again. I have made an appointment for Heather’s surgery this Tuesday, but I simply can’t pay for the procedure on my own after already covering emergency care.
