Help Heal Sarah Vaughan

Donation protected
Hi friends - I want to tell you about my beautiful young cousin Sarah Vaughan, who was recently diagnosed with Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkin Lymphoma.  Sarah is a new mother to six-week-old Aden.  They are blessed to live with her mother, Stephanie Vaughan, who helps with baby Aden as well as Aden’s cousin Lincoln.  Sarah also has incredible support from her grandmother, Judy Lewis, and many relatives nearby. We have a pretty big extended family, so Sarah and Stephanie have a lot of support for things like babysitting, food, and prayer, but what is really going to be a challenge is money.  Luckily, this form of Hodgkin Lymphoma is the most common and is curable, but it still requires her to put up a big fight. Sarah is facing chemotherapy, radiation, and a number of tests in the coming months. She is on Medicaid, which has already denied a CT scan, something she absolutely needs. We are praying they will approve it for this coming week; otherwise the financial burden falls on her and her family.  She needs to start tests and treatments as soon as possible, so raising this money is urgent. As you read on, you’ll see that she’s not only fighting for herself but for her future family as well. This financial uncertainty is a huge stress on the family and on Sarah, who needs to be able to focus on healing and being with her sweet baby Aden.

Last year, a week before she graduated from Dinwiddie High School, Sarah was in a near-fatal car accident.  Her beloved grandfather, Robert Lewis, had passed away just seven months earlier, and we all knew that he was watching over her that day as her guardian angel.  While she has recovered from that, there is a chance that some of the trauma from that accident and the subsequent surgeries started to cause some problems that led to her diagnosis.

Sarah has knots from the lymphoma, is exhausted, and is devastated.  She has had tests done already to determine her diagnosis, but there are many more ahead.  Right now, doctors believe her cancer is stage three, although she has a CT scan, PET scan, and heart echo all scheduled for next week.  She is also going to have a port put in for chemo and have a bone marrow test to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread there. As of now, Medicaid is not paying for everything, and because of her new baby and this diagnosis, she is out of work.

On top of all of that, because of the chemotherapy, there is a chance she won’t be able to have more children.   She is devastated by this news, but there is a possibility of having her eggs frozen. This would allow her to go through treatments and focus on getting well, knowing that she could still have the family she wants in the future.  Unfortunately, this too is very expensive. Medicaid will not pay for this. Her doctor is going to order it, but it will cost $7,000. Because this would need to be done before her treatments start, raising this money is really urgent.  My hope is that we can help this sweet, beautiful young woman survive and thrive!

Not too long ago, our family and friends gathered to celebrate at a baby shower for Sarah and Aden, and there was so much joy and anticipation for the new addition.  But we never know what God has planned; all we can do is be there for one another and offer any help we can. Just as we came together to celebrate her that day, we are here to help her now, and I hope and pray that you will find it in your heart to offer anything you are able to give as well.  Thanks, and God bless.
