Living with chronic sciatica with acute flare-ups and two herniated discs has made it extremely difficult for me to walk and get around, especially as a student navigating New York City. I currently use a two-wheel walker that helps me cover short distances at home, but it isn’t enough for the long days and distances I cover at NYU. On an average day, I walk about 8,000 steps between public transportation and classes, and without the right mobility aids, it’s become nearly impossible to keep up with my education and daily life, and to transition from the bedridden period to trying to stand and walk again.
Having a rollator would allow me to carry my backpack, take a seat when I get tired or when there are no accessible chairs, and manage the physical demands of campus life. On days when I’m feeling stronger, a forearm crutch would give me the stability I need without causing the posture issues that come with canes or hunching over a walker. The specific aids I’m hoping to get are the Smart Crutch and the Nova Star 8 DLX rollator, both recommended to me by someone who faces similar mobility challenges. These aids would make it possible for me to return to class sooner, rather than waiting for my pain flare-ups to subside completely. I could reuse them every few months when I have an episode.
I’m passionate about my studies in social sciences, focusing on media studies with a minor in the business of entertainment, media, and technology. I attend NYU with the help of financial aid and student loans, and I rely on Medicaid for my healthcare. Unfortunately, Medicaid doesn’t cover the specific aids I need, and my financial situation makes it difficult to afford them on my own. Missing classes has been tough, but with your support, I could get back to pursuing my education and future. Your contribution would make a real difference in my ability to participate fully in my education and daily life.
