Havenroot is an educational youth camp in Veneta, Oregon, formally known as Camp Wilani. The camp has been serving central Oregon youth with outdoor programs since the mid-1960s. Havenroot has hosted 'outdoor schools' for many school districts through the Campfire/Wilani program and others. We believe that giving children access to nature is critically important. Unfortunately, COVID-19 mandates shut down most outdoor school programs for almost two years, and then disaster struck again in 2022 when the camp’s tool barn burned down. Many of the buildings at the camp were constructed 50 years ago by volunteers and now must be brought up to current building code. Some of the documentation on these buildings was lost over the decades, so new architectural drawings must be commissioned, some foundation work must be done, as well as electrical work and other upgrades as required by the Lane County building department. The electrical work was the most pressing of issues, and all of the wiring across the camp has now been upgraded. Our bridge across the creek has been reinforced and has easily supported fire trucks and full water trucks, and the state fire department is satisfied with its construction. However, Lane County still requires their own stamp of approval on the bridge, and we are in that process. All of our buildings are safe and have been used without issue by summer camps and outdoor school for decades, but the county will not permit occupancy until they are brought up to current code, which for most of the buildings involves adding more insulation.
Havenroot is owned and managed by a small, family-owned business, and the sudden expenses required for these permit requirements, on top of building a new tool barn, are overwhelming. We humbly ask for grassroots financial support so that we may continue to serve our community. --- With gratitude Zoul, Greg and Linda.
