Help Harvin Walk Again with a Permanent Prosthesis

Harvin is a 24-year-old who I met two years ago. When I first met Harvin, I was immediately struck by his kind, humble, and respectful demeanor. This past March, Harvin mentioned he was having trouble walking due to pain and a burning sensation in his right foot. As his condition worsened, he was unable to work. Despite his efforts to get medical care at the local community health center, Harvin faced delays and was not seen in a timely manner. My family helped him apply for Free Care to cover the cost of some of his medical appointments.

After a series of appointments, an X-ray, and finally a biopsy at Yale in October 2025, Harvin was diagnosed with metastatic (lung) synovial sarcoma of his right foot. This rare cancer originates in the soft tissues, and in Harvin’s case, it had already spread to his lungs. The treatment plan changed from solely an amputation to adding systemic therapy, chemo and radiation. While the chances of a cure are low, according to Physicians, there is still hope because Harvin is young and remains optimistic.

As a friend and nurse, I became more involved in his care, visiting him multiple times a week to check on him, ensure he’s taking his medications, and help with daily needs. Our church community and friends have also rallied around Harvin, bringing meals, helping where they can, and keeping his living space clean. Even though our church is very small and each family has needs, everyone is doing their best to support him.

Currently, Harvin is using a temporary transtibial prosthesis that does not fit properly, making it impossible for him to bear weight on his foot. His prosthetic doctor has recommended a permanent prosthetic leg, which would allow Harvin to walk again and regain some independence. This permanent prosthesis is not covered by his discounted medical services, but it is essential for Harvin to be able to walk to his chemo and radiation appointments at Yale New Haven Hospital starting this March. Harvin is not able to work and has no saved funds for this prosthesis. Hence this GoFundMe was made. Beyond his immediate medical needs, Harvin dreams of being able to play soccer again someday with others who have prostheses, and to return to a more normal life as a young man.

As someone in the medical field, I know how life-changing this support would be for Harvin. Losing a leg is unimaginable for anyone, especially someone so young and full of hope. If we can make this situation even a little more hopeful for Harvin, I want to try. I invite you to support Harvin in any way you can—through prayer or a financial contribution. Any donation will be received with immense gratitude. I have never met a more grateful, optimistic young man in the midst of such a difficult situation, and I hope you’ll join us in supporting Harvin!
