In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall in Jamaica on 28 October 2025 as an extremely powerful Category 5 storm, communities across the island — especially the southern and western parishes — have suffered catastrophic damage, widespread flooding, and prolonged power outages. Emergency assessments and humanitarian agencies report extensive destruction of homes and infrastructure across Hanover, Westmoreland, and neighboring parishes, leaving thousands in urgent need of shelter, food, and basic power.
Hanover Educational Institute (HEI) is launching an urgent GoFundMe appeal to raise US$25,000 to deliver immediate humanitarian relief to families in Hanover whose homes were fully or partially destroyed by Melissa. Hanover is among Jamaica’s more vulnerable parishes; local profiles and reporting document long-standing poverty and fragile living conditions that make recovery especially hard for many residents.
How your donation will help (target: US$25,000)
• Small household solar generators (for charging phones, powering lights, refrigeration of medicines) — to restore basic power where the grid is down.
• Food for a community soup kitchen & pantry — to feed families while normal food supply chains recover.
• Solar floodlights — to increase safety and allow households to move and work safely after dark.
• Tents and bed cots — for families whose homes are uninhabitable while repairs are made.
Why this matters: Health, safety, and community resilience hinge on quick access to light, power, and food. Regional agencies and UN partners describe ongoing shelter, water, and health needs across the affected parishes; early, targeted assistance reduces the risk of illness, improves security, and speeds recovery.
Accountability: Hanover Educational Institute will purchase items locally where possible, work with community leaders and parish officials to target the most vulnerable households, and publish an itemized report and photos of distributions on our GoFundMe page and via HEI’s social channels within two weeks of the campaign’s close. The Hanover Educational Institute is registered under the Companies Act as a Limited Non-Profit Company No. 69830.
Please give what you can — US$10, US$50, US$100 — and share this campaign with friends, family, and community groups. Every contribution brings light, a meal, and a safer night for a family in Hanover. Thank you for standing with our community in this urgent hour.
The Hanover Educational Institute has been operating since 2002.
