Hi my name is Nicole and I am raising money for my daughter Hannah to get a diabetic alert dog.
Hannah is a creative and fun loving 9 year old girl who was recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. There is no cure for Type 1, she relies on insulin and technology that alerts of low blood sugars to keep her alive. We are beyond grateful for the technology available to us but are often reminded that’s nothing is perfect. A reputably trained medical alert dog would add another layer of protection for Hannah. It takes a significant amount of time, money, and training to obtain a service dog.
September 13, 2020 is a day I will never forget. The sky was dark and the air hard to breathe as the state was engulfed in wildfires. We were also several months into the pandemic and eager for life to return to normal. Naive that life would never again be “normal”. It had been a rough spring and summer between school going online without notice, having to permanently close our small business, and not being able to see friends and family as steadily as we once did. I would be lying if I said we weren’t all feeling lonely and a bit sad, because of this we did not notice Hannah’s early symptoms as something that should have alarmed us. One morning Hannah was suddenly very sick and I got the gut wrenching feeling that this was an emergency and her daddy rushed her to the hospital. We had amazing medical staff between our local hospital and the children’s hospital that acted fast. God helped her recover remarkably quick without further complications.
Hannah’s battle is far from over. She will rely on insulin and the ability to know when her her blood sugar is high or low (through meters or otherwise) for the rest of her life. It is important to us to have every layer of protection we can to keep our precious girl safe! Electronics can fail or mis read from time to time. We recently experienced some Some scary lows while Hannah’s CGM lost connection. Having a reputably trained diabetic alert dog would be an amazing asset to help alert of highs and lows.
