Help Hanadi Reach Safety: A Fundraising Campaign for Erasmus+ alumna in Gaza
(Note: Since GoFundMe only operates in some countries, Erasmus+ friends and fellow members of the OCEANS Network , Scott, Neringa, Samir, Leila and Youssef, are facilitating this campaign on Hanadi’s behalf. Scott Darby, former President of OCEANS, who is based in the UK, will be the one receiving and transferring funds to Hanadi.)
Hanadi’s journey
Hanadi Abu Jazar (24 years old) was born in Rafah, Gaza and has dedicated her life to education, volunteering, and community service in order to build more peaceful and interculturally aware societies. She has served her community in various roles: as an English language teacher, assistant at the women’s centre, and coordinator of an orphan support programme.
Hanadi has received her BA in English language and literature from the Islamic University of Gaza. She also spent a semester at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona as an Erasmus+ student, where she broadened her horizons and learned about the volunteering opportunities of various EU-supported programmes. As a youth leader, Hanadi has:
- Led the No One Behind project , a 3-day training program for young people from Mediterranean countries implemented in Dahab, Egypt in March 2023.
- Volunteered as a member of the Community Development team of the OCEANS Network, an international ERASMUS+ student and alumni network founded by the European Commission, and joined its Annual General Meeting in Rome, Italy in July 2022.
- Volunteered for a project that allowed the Erasmus+ Student and Alumni Alliance to send members of the Oceans Network, Erasmus Student Network, and Erasmus Mundus Association to the Mediterranean Youth Academy that took place in Alexandria, Egypt in September 2022. There, Hanadi and her colleagues participated in a global dialogue for human rights, peace, education, and gender equality.
Why We Need Your Help
Hanadi's life has been all about making a positive impact both at home and internationally. But now, she's facing danger in Gaza, and she needs your help!
At this moment, Hanadi lives with her parents and two brothers who need medical assistance which currently can not be acquired in Gaza. They all live at their home in Rafah, in a house that has been gravely damaged by the missiles. Despite the challenges, Hanadi's spirit remains unbroken. Here is what Hanadi had to share:
“I have been living with my family and all people here in Gaza Strip in Rafah city under terrible suffering that turned our life upside down under bombardment for 5 months. Rafah city is overcrowded with displaced people who are living in plastic tents that do not protect them. Infectious diseases spread among us as a result of overcrowding, lack of access to clean water, health treatment and hygienic necessities. Also, we prepare food and make bread in an unhealthy way through using wood or paper, cloth and plastic pieces which is mainly harmful to our health and to the environment. The situation in Gaza remains uncertain, terrifying, and dangerous. Your support means the world to me.”
Your donation can make a significant difference in Hanadi's life. Here's how your support will help:
- Safety and Security: Help Hanadi relocate to Cairo, Egypt, from where she can work and live without the constant risk to her safety.
Continued Education and Work: Support her pursuit of further education. While Hanadi works on her dream to get admitted to a Masters degree, she will volunteer for 5 months at the Mediterranean Youth Foundation, a youth empowerment organisation working on international dialogue, gender equality and environmental protection based in Egypt. Since the organisation does not have the resources to cover Hanadi’s stay, we would support her volunteering through the fundraiser.
Our goal is to raise £8,850 to cover the costs of their safe passage and relocation to Alexandria, Egypt. Your support can truly make a life-saving difference not only to Hanadi, but also to her family. Please consider donating today and sharing this campaign with your network. Your contributions, no matter the amount, will make a significant impact and will help fund the following:
- Rafah border crossing (estimated): £5,300
- Transportation to the crossing, and then to Cairo Airport: £250
- Passport fees: £100
- Accommodation rent (£320 per month): 5 months: £1600
- Living expenses: 5 months (£270 per month): $£1350
- GoFundMe fees: £8,600 * 2.9% = £250
Any funds raised beyond the goal would be used to support the family, including two brothers who need medical support.
Every contribution, no matter the size, brings Hanadi one step closer to safety and allows her to keep making a difference.
