On Tuesday night, Lucy, Hoolie and I landed back in LAX after a flight back from New Orleans. After an upsetting interaction with a hostile shuttle driver who pushed Lucy while she was boarding with a cane (a story for another time), we were exhausted and ready to make the 2 hour drive home back to San Diego. We made our way towards Haley’s new Prius, which we parked in an enclosed private lot by the airport.
However when we got to the car, it wouldn’t start. We tried to jump it, and as soon as it turned on it started to make an unsettling loud grinding sound. Slowly it began to dawn on us; someone had entered the parking garage and stolen her catalytic converter right off of her car. These are particularly expensive and easy to steal on Priuses. We realized this too late.
Haley had just purchased this car a few months ago, and it’s the nicest thing she’s ever owned. While the precious metals in the component can be flipped for around $400 for thieves, to buy a new one (the only way they can be installed is new) costs $3000 for parts and labor. And—her insurance has refused to cover it.
We’ve all been chugging along through this pandemic, Haley and Lucy particularly pouring their heart and souls into starting their own business, running on unemployment, and then with this heartbreaking surprise when we got back from a rare vacation, Haley doesn’t have the funds to front this on her own.
We’re calling on this community, who knows and loves Hoolie with her thoughtful, humble, silly, kind heart, to help us in any way they can with this shocking robbery. If you can give $5, $25, $500, any inch we can make towards this costly repair would be appreciated with humble gratitude. We are hoping our community of family, friends, fellow artists and goofballs can chip in to build the funds for Hoolie to lift up out of these stressful past couple of days and get back on the road!
Thank you and we love you!
