Keep Winter Safe in Haiti
Donation protected
UPDATE: Six months ago you all helped me to get my friend Winter in to a safe home in Wozo, a small country town that is far from all of the gangs running Port-au-Prince right now.
The good news is he’s happy there, feels safe, and is working as a volunteer with sanitary awareness programs. Somehow Winter still has the ability to stay positive, and find a way to support his fellow Haitians.
My goal for Oct. is to raise the $700 he needs to pay for his rent for the next 6 months. He does have plans for becoming more independent in the future, by creating a business for himself, so this support is also working towards that goal.
As a way of thanking you for all your generosity, I'm going to match any donation to reach this goal, so all this drive needs to do is raise $350.
As always, thank you for anything you can do! It's one small step, but it directly helps one human being that deserves a chance to improve their lot in life, and is willing to do what it takes to get there.
ORIGINAL POST: This photo dates back about ten years, from a time when I was visiting a small orphanage in Haiti.
It was pretty soon after their earthquake, and I was happy to have found another group of women who wanted to go there to make art with the children.
Our goal was to try to find a way to make their days a little lighter, if only for a few hours.
My friends and I tried to visit as many schools as we could over a two-week period, and the warm embrace we received everywhere we went is something I’ll never forget.
The sad part about those post-earthquake days? They were in many ways actually the good old days.
In the years since, Haiti has been hit with one more catastrophe after another.
The most recent upheaval comes from the fallout of the assassination in 2021 of their president, Jovenel Moise.
It has since created a political vacuum, and sadly the gangs have come out on top. They control almost half of the country and make it more dangerous than ever to even just walk down the street.
My friend Winter, who used to run a school in Port-a-Prince, has now joined forces with a few of his friends and need support to pay $1500 for the drilling of a well near their homes so they no longer need to venture out for water.
There’s also the constant need for food too, so any additional funds will go to help support them through this difficult time.
You can read more about the situation in Haiti below, and any awareness you can bring to the situation is helpful too.
If you can find a way to support Winter and his friends, I will be forever grateful. And if you'd like to be in contact with him on Facebook, I'm sure he would be happy to fill you in on his plans. Message me and I'll be happy to put you in touch.
Thank you all for any support you can manage. It's appreciated by many in more ways than you know!
