My name is Gwyneth and I'm a 64-year-old teacher getting ready for retirement. I have COPD and a hip problem that makes walking and stair climbing difficult. My apartment is ideal for me now, only three steps to climb and in a safe neighborhood with family living nearby. I'm at risk of being unable to renew my lease in a month.

I work for a teacher placement agency. Work is very slow during the summer, and I was very lucky to get a placement at a daycare center this summer. The daycare became unable to pay my agency, who, in turn, was unable to pay me. Then the agency canceled the contract with the daycare, and I had no work until the school year began.

I fell behind in rent by two months and accumulated late fees. I have now almost caught up, but still have a shortfall. My lease is due to renew in December 2025. My property manager has informed me that if I'm not completely caught up in my billing by November 1, 2025, my lease won't be renewed.

I can't begin to afford to move, and I don't have the physical capacity to handle a move. It would be extremely difficult to find another apartment that accommodates me as this one does.

I am very frightened. Your help would be deeply appreciated.
