On March 12 Gwen was diagnosed with Covid-19. She was doing OK with managing her symptoms at home until things took a sudden turn on Monday, March 15. She was having trouble breathing, her fever spiked to 104.7, and an innocent looking bump suddenly spread with infection. Gwen called an ambulance and was taken to the hospital. As they were assessing her they realized the infection was spreading quickly and they needed to get it under control right away. After a CT scan to ensure her lungs could handle anesthesia she was rushed to emergency surgery. It was discovered that the infection was necrotizing fasciitis, a very serious bacterial infection that can be life threatening if not caught early. Her blood sugar has also been a big concern. It was extremely high (over 400) when she was admitted and they are trying to get a handle on that too. It is believed that it is a side effect of Covid and the infection.
She is currently stable and in isolation at the hospital. She will need atleast one more surgery and they said her hospital stay will be a minimum of 4 days, probably much longer.. Gwen doesn't have insurance. And while we hope that she can receive some financial relief through the CARES act, some procedures will not be covered. We are facing an extremely high hospital bill.
Gwen doesn't ask for help but is always willing to give it in anyway she can. So even if you have a few dollars to spare it would go a long way. We don't know what else will be needed for her care and we are not out of the woods yet. Thank you for your consideration.
