Statements from the Families:
Sara and Gwen
On Wednesday, Oct. 3rd while traveling after school with friends on a regularly scheduled paddle boarding outing my daughter, "G", was involved in a vehicle accident. She, and several of the other children, were rushed to the trauma ward at Mission Hospital. My little one was then sent to the ICU due to a Grade 3 laceration of her spleen (&, I later learned, a bit of fluid in her chest in addition to blood in her abdominal cavity). After 3 days in the hospital she was released; however within the next 30 hours we returned to the ER due to increased shoulder pain (a classic sign of splenic bleeding and a warning we were told to watch for). After further tests showed that the pressure on her diaphragm due to slow clearing of the blood was causing the phrenic nerve to signal pain, she was released next day.
With instructions to stay home for a week (which as her only parent meant more time away from work in addition to the time spent in hospital) and avoid P.E. for 4 to 6 months (no blunt force trauma can be risked) as well as regular ultrasounds and check-ups in the future to ensure proper healing my child is facing a long, slow (and per her Boring - she can't even paddle board as per the doctor a fall into the water is too much force to exert on her spleen during the healing process!) recovery but continues, as I do, to be amazed and grateful for all the outpourings of love and assistance!
Naomi
Naomi was one of the five kids who were transported to mission trauma center with injuries. I had lost my 20 year job in the middle of July which left us also losing health insurance. I applied for an individual plan for her in middle of September but her coverage is not effective until November. Due to the large amount of bills that will come in we would be over the moon to have any help covering these should the auto insurance not cover all of them. Naomi is still emotionally upset about what happened and with time hoping everyone can heal.
Anais
Anais suffered injuries to her foot and toes from the accident. Our family has incurred many medical bills that won’t all be covered, on top of continuing appointments with orthopedists and chiropractic visits.
Each family has varying costs, but we will share the funds raised equally between all families participating.
