Against all the advice I have received about sustainable fashion being commercially non-viable and someone else’s problem, I have started the journey to become a sustainable fashion designer. Being a young, bipolar African with an idealistic world view, many things come with a steep learning curve. I started my brand, Guyllelujah, as an answer to all the things I felt were corrupt in my environment. It also serves as a means by which I can practice my own social responsibility for the betterment of the world around me.

Needless to say, this has been harder to practice than it is to conceptualize; but the human spirit is resilient. Last year, against numerous economic, psychological, geographical and other nuanced limitations, I successfully funded, designed and constructed my first collection. I proved to myself, and the world, that it is possible.

This is hardly a unique feat, many people have overcome greater hurdles and accomplished much greater things. However, I still strongly believe that there are many things we can and should do better as a society. The way we consume has become unsustainable and continues to damage the health of the world we draw our life blood from. Coming from a land where political leaders are oftentimes, less than inspiring, Guylellujah provides me with an incredible platform to practice socially, and ethically responsible leadership, so it is incumbent upon me to be the change I hope to see in the world around me. Sustainable fashion allows me to do this, and more.

In less than a year, I was able to produce beautifully crafted clothing out of the limited resources I could scrounge together or upcycle. I am extremely proud of the garments I produced; they represent the faithful and courageous stand I took towards becoming a more responsible maker. Almost as affirmation of my movement and growth in the right direction, and hot off the heels of hosting Guyllelujah’s first Fashion Revolution Week, Helsinki Fashion Week (HFW) has come calling. This presents me with a massive opportunity to make a strong statement to consumers, my peers and the market at large. Sustainability is not just a pie in the sky ideal that is unattainable, it is how we will and should create and consume if we have any hope at a better, and more sustainable future for generations to come. Help Guyllelujah spread an ideal worth living up to by funding our £1,000 registration fee for HFW.
