Hi all - we had a nasty Christmas surprise today, and as much as we hate to ask, we desperately need your help.
After losing my dad in February, the condo association who always hated him for being a) married to an IPOC (indigenous person of color - my mom) and b) a generally good and decent human being redoubled their efforts to try and steal our family home to sell it to more palatable (to them,) white people. Because of their hounding and manipulation of the bankruptcy court (where they drove my father in the last years of his life,) my family has not even been able to properly grieve or process his loss. Their financial demands are highway robbery and drove me to working 80+ hour weeks - which in December finally landed me in the hospital. I've been out of work for a few weeks and my partner and I have been trying to keep my own family and my mom/this situation afloat: today, of all days, we hit critical mass.
On Christmas Eve of all days, a motion was filed and agreed to that without a $2300 payment by Dec 31st, the bankruptcy case can be dismissed and these people, supposed "neighbors" can foreclose. They've also sought to prevent a dismissal and refiling: they want the brown people out of their neighborhood.
It would take $16,000 to pay off what they say dad owed them (under $2000 in missed HOA fees from the time he was hospitalized after a near fatal car accident that left him permanently disabled until his death, and over $18000 in their "legal fees" to collect.) We've been paying this case for three years, even during the pandemic (there were months where it took every cent even I made to try and keep my parents off the street,) but they've filed enough motions to exploit "additional legal fees" and keep that tally insurmountable. A fundraiser upon my dad's death met their set of demands laid out in the few months immediately after, and I'm so grateful but we did not meet the tally to stop their abuses/actions, and we're trying to raise $2500 before the end of the year to solve this immediate problem. I do not have enough left to my name to even make a dent in this. If we should go over at all, it would buy us a little piece of mind for the next payments due.
Please, please help if you can. Thank you and merry Christmas, happy holidays and have a blessed new year.
