Help Greg Singer Recover from Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Donation protected
Hello All,
As some of you might have heard by now on July 14, 202,4 our very good friend Greg Singer (SCA - Sir Ivar) has had a rare bout of Guillain-Barre syndrome. The doctors believe GB was triggered by a shingles vaccine he received e a few days prior. GB is a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. This caused weakness and numbness throughout his body. Some parts experienced some paralysis. Along with it comes pain, lots of pain, and discomfort. It is a truly nasty syndrome that has a very long healing time and a lot of therapy is needed to reach a potential full recovery. Here is a link if you would like to know the ins and outs of this. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/guillain-barre-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20362793 Greg received treatment IVIG therapy for several days after the diagnosis of GB was made. As of July 19 the muscle weakness continued to spread throughout his body.
In addition to the GB, an issue with his heart has been discovered. It is not ejecting all of the blood out of his heart. The doctors said his heart was functioning at 30% efficiency.
As of July 24 he continues his battle continues with physical, occupational, and speech therapy at the rehab center.
We all know he is a fighter and is doing his best to heal, however, the financial burden is steep. This is from Mindy's FB post on July 28: "Many of you have reached out and asked how you can help or if we need anything or if I am okay. It is very stressful to try and focus more than just on today. But when I do, I can tell you that we are fine right now. The end of August/ beginning of September will be a different matter. August 30, will be his last full paycheck and at that point, I will have to absorb the cost of health insurance for the family since it will no longer be coming out of his paycheck in addition to all the other household expenses. He does not have a short-term disability policy but his employer does maintain a long-term disability policy for all full-time employees but this can not be accessed until FMLA ends. FMLA will end around Oct 8. During this time period, I would be ever so grateful for any assistance anyone is willing to help with."
My husband who was squired(before he was elevated) to Ivar in the SCA, shared a little history about the SCA household "Haus Kriegstrum" that Greg/Ivar started years ago. "In Haus Kriegsturm, the skull on our banner is named Orm. He is a constant reminder of our mortality. Not in an impending doom sort of way but as a reminder to make the most of your time and to be thankful for what you have." We are thankful for each and everyone of you to help on this difficult journey.
The current goal is set at $30,000 which is a huge number to reach and I understand that. Even if we get close to that number, I know Greg, Mindy, and their children will appreciate everything that folks can donate.
If you cannot donate, please share the link to this fundraiser on your social media so they can get as much help as possible. And please share this on your page once a week so the frequency can go up and as many can have the opportunity to see and help this incredible family in their time of need. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me and I will be happy to answer. [email redacted]
