God Bless you all.

It’s has been a rough year. I am hoping to raise some money to help offset the loss of income and help alleviate some of the stress that comes with not being able to work and not having a full time income coming in for my son who was recently diagnosed with and is fighting hard against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

My son Greg Shaw is 31 and the father of 3, 2 boys and a girl aged 6 , 8 and 9.

EI sick benefits have just ran out and his next option  is Ontario works until he can get  Ontario Disability benefit, but those systems although helpful in this rough time, will take time and  wont cover his expenses due to inability to work due to treatments and having to be in hospital then recovery over the next year in his fight to survive.

Those wishing to support Greg can also email
Money transfer.  [email redacted]. Please
Note Greg in the message and I will be sure he receives it.

The back story

He was feeling a bit sluggish and had some pains in his chest when doing construction work and being active such an playing with his kids . More tired then normal.

He went to Campbellford memorial Hospital on January 25, 2021 to see what was wrong.

They did the standard tests, EKG etc, took blood.

His blood results were not okay, and he ended up getting a blood transfusion – 2 pints and was booked on Friday to go Kingston for a bone marrow biopsy, to find out what was happening with his blood, for him to need a transfusion.

January 29 he arrived home from Kingston, barely walking, hip sore and irritated from the bone marrow biopsy process.

By 8:30 that night his life was changed forever!!

Kingston called and gave him a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Devastating news for anyone, at any age.

He was told if he did nothing, he had 2 monts to live. If he did moderate treatment, a year to live, but with an aggressive treatment he had a 70 – 80% change of survival past 5 years with a stem cell transplant.

So now our goal is a stem cell transplant.

Feb 1, 2021 We went to Kingston, he was admitted to start the treatment, called Induction Therapy. They gave him 2 different chemo drugs over the next 7 days. He lost his immune system and had a few rough days along the way.

27 days later he was released, his immune system was somewhat recovered. A couple more trips to Kingston for blood work to check his level.

There were lots of transfusions during that first treatment, and anti-fungals and blood thinner and a whole barrage of other meds.

The next hurdle was another bone marrow biopsy, to see if they forced remission.

March 2, 2021 away to Kingston, Bone Marrow Biopsy # 2 – with anxiety we waited for results.

March 9, 2021  off to Kingston,  results were not what we had hoped for. At Diagnosis 48% of blood was leukemia, after 1st round of induction chemo, they dropped to 7%  good news, bad news. Great they dropped, but not enough. His ultimate goal is to get to Ottawa to get a stem cell transplant, his levels need to be below 5%. This meant he had to go do another treatment.

March11th, back to Kingston, admitted for round 2 of induction, this time with a 3rd chemo drug, more powerful and more dangerous. He managed to get through the treatment, and was able to get out of hospital after 2 weeks, but that meant daily trips to Kingston to get blood work, to check his levels and he had a few more blood/platelet transfusion an electrolit supplements.

April 6th back to Kingston for Bone Marrow Biopsy #3 (they aren’t pleasant and you are very sore in the hips afterwards)

April 14, 2021 Bone marrow results, good news – AML is in forced remission. Ottawa in person appointment set.

April 28, 2021 in person appointment in Ottawa, they took blood and went over a few things. Stem Cell Transplant is in Ottawa and a minimum of 100+ days to start.

April 29th admitted to Kingston this time Consolidation therapy – to keep Forced Remission and out again May 4th.

Good news is Ottawa has a few stem cell donor matches and are in the process of doing a double confirmation to confirm the matches

Pending the timing to start the Ottawa stem cell transplant process, Greg may need one more 5 days stay at Kingston for another consolidation chemo, to keep him in forced remission.

Patiently waiting for admittance day to Ottawa.

There is along road ahead and any amount will help ease the financial stress while  fighting to survive and is greatly appreciated.
