Help Greg, Pepa and the Lockhart Family

On Thursday, December 27, the lives of Greg, Pepa and Pilar were changed forever. Pilar, Greg's ex-wife and mother of his child, suffered a horrific accident when she fell in the kitchen and broke the C6 vertebrae in her spine. She was rushed to the hospital where she is currently stable but, tragically, unable to walk.

Pilar has been the primary caregiver of their daughter Pepa for the last 10 years. For those of you who don't know, Pepa has Down Syndrome and Type 1 Diabetes and requires near constant supervision. To say Pilar’s work as a single mother has been heroic would be an understatement; she’s the best of the best. Unfortunately, it appears that Pilar will have a long road to recovery. She will be in the hospital for at least the next nine months while she faces multiple surgeries and rehabilitation to hopefully regain the ability to walk again. Therefore, the responsibility of primary caregiver is now Greg's.

The day after the accident, Greg packed up his life and moved to Spain to be with Pepa while Pilar recovers. This required leaving his house, car, immediate family and friends, with less than a day's notice. His Oklahoma life in general is now on pause while he tends to more important matters.

There is still much uncertainty, but we do know that there will be many months of recovery. The move will bring significant challenges in employment and income for Greg while he attempts to get things sorted out in Spain. Any funds donated would go to ensure that Pepa's life and education can continue with some sense of normalcy and stability. This includes housing expenses, utilities, food, transportation as well as potential legal expenses, as Greg was only able to secure a Tourist Visa given the urgency of this matter. Additionally, the family’s existing home is on a second floor and not wheelchair-accessible, so new living arrangements may need to be found before Pilar is released from the hospital. Any leftover funds not used to directly support the family will be donated to the National Down Syndrome Society (ndss.org).
