Grant is a delightfully kind-hearted person who brings so much light to everyone around him. He lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which means his mobility is becoming more limited as time goes on. After a long fight with insurance, Grant finally received a power chair that can provide him greater mobility and independence. Unfortunately, our lack of a wheelchair accessible van means that Grant cannot use the power chair at school or in the community. We currently have a 2013 Honda Pilot, and we have to lift Grant into the car and also lift a heavy mobility scooter in and out for him to get around. This poses a risk of injury for Grant and for us as his parents and caregivers.
A wheelchair accessible van would allow Grant to safely get to and from school in a chair that supports his body and disease. It would give him more independence to go places in the community and help him feel like a mature teenager, rolling into the car by himself rather than being lifted. Grant is getting older, and he wants to experience life with dignity and confidence. The van would also provide a safe way for him to get to medical appointments, school, and community outings, reducing the risk of injury from transfers.
We are now at a point where we need a wheelchair accessible van to transport Grant to school, medical appointments, and simply to get out and experience life beyond our home. Unfortunately, these vehicles are extremely expensive, and this is not something insurance will cover. We are asking for help to raise funds toward the purchase of a safe, reliable accessible van for Grant. This van would mean more than transportation—it would mean independence, inclusion, and the ability for Grant to continue participating in everyday life with dignity. If you feel led to give, share, or support us in any way, we would be incredibly grateful. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to making this possible for Grant. Thank you for loving our family and for being part of Grant’s journey. Our family motto is: don’t take life for GRANTed.
