Help "Granny's Daughters" Film Get Made
A Few Words From Our Producer
Hi, my name is Jessica Thomas, assistant director and producer of our short film Granny's Daughters written and directed by Summer J. Robinson.
While both heartbreaking and uplifting, Summer writes about the dynamics between a family of women surviving, changing, and evolving during the turn of the century when traditional values are no longer welcome into the modern world.
From the depths of our appreciation, thank you for your donations in helping us share this story.
LOGLINE
As changes in the family and community unfold, three generations of women come together to acknowledge and honor how things used to be and figure out how to move forward without the physical presence of the family matriarch.
MISSION
Granny's Daughters is a semi-autobiographical family drama about three women and their connection to Granny, the roots of the family tree. Despite living their own lives with individual needs, desires and challenges, through selfless acts, the shoulders of community, and a place to call home, their sisterhood remains yolked and equally bonded by the grace of caring for Granny into her dying days.
PROJECT DETAILS
The story is centered around the house - Granny's house, and the decision Sahrah, Granny's great-granddaughter, has to make. Granny has given her home to Sahrah, and Sahrah must decide whether or not to keep or sell the family home.
Like many neighborhoods, the community is undergoing gentrification. Businesses are closing and new modern businesses opening – people they’ve always known and seen in the area are being displaced. Sahrah, Monique, and Linda can’t hold on to Granny, but they can hold onto a piece of her through her home.
Bombarded with advice and opinion, Sahrah confronts her decision to sell her home and pursue a fulfilling life or treasure the legacy her Granny left behind?

ABOUT THE CREW
Have you ever wondered what a film dream team looks like? Well, look no further.
1. Summer J. Robinson, Writer & Director
Hello! My name is Summer and I am an artist with a passion for storytelling through film. My love for storytelling through creative writing eventually led to me developing a passion for filmmaking, which I have been doing since 2011. My films reclaim narratives by telling some of the many diverse and unique stories of Black people throughout the diaspora with a particular focus on Black women's intergenerational stories.
To date I have written, directed, and produced four documentaries and three short narrative films.
In 2021 I founded Silver Bangles Productions, a storytelling agency that produces in-house film content and offers book publishing services. Currently I am working on my thesis film, Granny's Daughters, as a part of my MA program at Georgia State University. I could say that this passion and power project has been in the works since I began writing the script in 2020, but that would be an understatement. This story has been manifesting for generations, and I am so excited for my team and I to bring it to life.
2. Josh Cleveland, DP & Producer
I am a Filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose work mainly explores how aesthetics and Narrative can form dialogues around ideas of human care. I conceptually and visually hope to encourage investigations around ethics, race, and other modes of social, political, and cultural embodiment. I seek to explore how honest critiques, re-evaluations, and a rupturing of abusive hegemonic authorities can potentially produce safer and generative spaces for marginalized and underrepresented communities and a better understanding of our authentic selves.
3. Jessica Thomas, Assistant Director & Producer
Jess Thomas, aka JT, is a commercial videographer and film creative from Alaska. Jess graduated from film school in 2018 and then moved to Atlanta to pursue her passion for storytelling in the “Hollywood of the South.” Jess has worked on many shorts, feature films and has a few credits on her IMDB page.
Through the pandemic, she has run Reel Legacies Media, a video production service that helps private businesses transition to the digital space. Her intent was to create purposeful, personal and authentic legacies through film. Jess loves to read stories, produce films, write scripts, work out and educate people on the film industry. @jessthevideographer
