Hey everyone!
As many of you know already; my name is Grace Brulotte, I’m 28 years old, and I was born and raised in Fernie but am currently living in Cranbrook. I’m a full time wheelchair user, due to having Arthrogryposis and extreme Scoliosis.
My wheelchair is my only way of living an independent and full life. But like all things, my wheelchair can break or need servicing. There’s also seating clinic, where my wheelchair can be required for 3 or 4 days at a time to create my custom seating. Lastly, due to my extreme medical needs, I am finding it increasingly necessary to visit specialists in big city centres to manage my declining condition. Unfortunately, wheelchairs have a high likelihood of being severely damaged on flights. Since my wheelchair is so expensive ($48,000 to be exact), and the seating is so customized, it’s too high of a risk to take it with me on flights.
This is why having a manual wheelchair is an absolute necessity. It serves as a back up when my power chair is being serviced (you know, instead of me just having to lay in bed all day) and gives me something to use during seating clinic. Most importantly, a manual chair is a much more viable option to take on flights, allowing me to get the medical treatment I need.
Unfortunately, the Ministry will only cover $2200 of the $4000 manual wheelchair I need. So I’m having to fundraise to make up the almost $1900 difference. If you feel so inclined, it would mean the world to me if you or someone you know could help support my efforts. A manual wheelchair is so important to my life and wellbeing, because well… You can’t put a price on independence!
With all of my heart thank you for helping me get my manual wheelchair! Please share if you are able!
