Hi, my name is Stephanie and I'm Goose's mom. We recently adopted this sweet girl to fill a big empty hole in our hearts after losing our 13-year-old GSD. Within a week of her arriving at our home, Goose was rushed into emergency surgery for head swelling so severe she couldn't open her eyes. The emergency vet hospital treated her for sepsis, flushed the abscess, and sent her home with surgical drains in place. Cultures revealed antibiotic-resistant E. coli, necrotizing fasciitis, and Proteus mirabilis. After her surgical drains were removed, bone fragments began working their way out of the drain site, indicating a suspected skull fracture. Our amazing primary vet has been working to optimize Goose's antibiotics to give her the best chance of surviving this!
The good news is there are no longer signs of infection, Goose remains on high-dose antibiotics, leaving her at a very high risk of seizures. However, the drain site is still producing fluid that risks abscessing again. Our vet suspects this is sinus fluid draining secondary to the skull fracture.
Goose is on the road to recovery, but she needs a CT scan and specialist to confirm the skull fracture diagnose and treat her. The estimated cost of the CT scan (including anesthesia), initial visit, and remaining course of antibiotics is $2,500.
