Golden Wheat Bakery, a beloved family-owned spot in Seattle’s Central District, was broken into on November 24. A masked person smashed the front glass door and stole the cash register.
Angel Rocha, his mother, and extended family have been serving the neighborhood from this same location for 13 years. If you’ve been in, you know their pies, breakfast burritos, tamales, empanadas, quiche, bagels, croissants, pastries, and their horchata latte — and how warmly they treat everyone who walks through the door.
They’re already back open, operating behind plywood and using a pie box as their temporary point-of-sale just to keep things moving through the holiday rush.
Angel has always kept the bakery insured, but when insurance rates recently skyrocketed, he had to switch policies. The break-in happened in the middle of that transition. In the past, insurance has only covered basic glass replacement, not upgrades or lost income.
This fundraiser is meant to bridge the gap — to help them move from plywood to a more secure front door and to cover some of the immediate costs and lost time from the break-in.
If you’re able, please donate and share. Any amount helps show Angel and his family that the community is behind Golden Wheat and wants them here for many years to come.
