Our dear Gloria Schulman is an incredible person who now needs the help of her community.
Gloria has accomplished so much over the course of her life. She testified in Tallahassee in support of legislation allowing women to own their own real estate brokerages and was part of the team that helped bring the Special Olympics to Jacksonville. She later became an administrator in the Duval County school system, where she worked selflessly with children and fellow educators for 30 years before retiring.
In retirement, Gloria has cherished time with her family—including including her late husband, as well as her three sons, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. An avid knitter, she has also given back to others, knitting around 100 scarves each year for battered women, shelters, and other organizations.
At 90 years old, Gloria has unfortunately spent much of the past 14 months in and out of the hospital due to heart issues and complications of diabetes and Stage 4 chronic kidney disease. She is currently in a rehabilitation center recovering from complications related to kidney failure. When she returns home, she will have limited use of her lower body and will require daily care as she cannot independently manage her basic needs.
Our family has explored every option to get Gloria the help she deserves. Her son Jeff has been her caregiver for the last four years and had taken the lead on reaching out to every possible avenue to assist Gloria. For example, Veterans organizations, skilled nursing facilities, law firms, etc. None were able to help within the timeline that Gloria needs. For many avenues, there are back-logs of up to a year, which is sadly not feasible given Gloria's condition. If there were any other solution, we would have taken it. Creating a GoFundMe was not something we wanted to do, but it is now our only option.
With the time she has left, we are hoping to bring Gloria home from the facility where she currently resides. In her own home, she could be surrounded by the people and memories she loves most, while caregivers visit each day to help care for her. Unfortunately, the care she needs is expensive.
We are asking Gloria’s friends, family, and community to consider contributing if they are able. Your support will help give her comfort and dignity during this stage of her life, and it would mean the world to our family to give back to a woman who has given so much to others.
