Help Glenda and Warren Get the Care They Need

(written by Lisa, our daughter)

In February, my mom Glenda had two strokes that sent her to the emergency room. After only a few days her insurance (never use Medicare Advantage, it's terrible) insisted she be sent to a rehabilitation center for nursing care. She was told after only a few weeks that insurance would no longer cover her stay.

Her husband and my stepdad Warren has dementia and cannot be left alone because he can no longer take care of himself, so she decided to set him up in the same rehab center in their assisted living ward on her own dime. While in assisted living care, he developed a kidney infection, went into septic shock, and ended up in the ICU. Then insurance did the same thing and sent him to the nursing care wing of the rehab center.

At every point in this, my mom has been paying out of pocket for at least one of them, at a cost of around $5000 a month.

Now, against all doctors' advice (and after 3 denials and 3 successful appeals), the insurance company has finally stopped paying for Warren's care. And since doctors and the rehab center think that he needs to be in nursing care, they will not allow him to be sent to the cheaper assisted living option.

Mom is likely coming home on April 17, but if the insurance will not pay for Warren's care, he will have to come home and be without the necessary nursing care that he so desperately needs. My mom, while thankfully doing so much better than she was 2 months ago, is still healing herself, and is not strong enough to care for someone with so many needs as he has.

We would really like to keep him in the nursing care ward for another month so he can get better, and mom can gain more strength in order to care for him at home. She will still need to hire home care nurses for both of them later, but at this point, we're concerned for his health if he is not given the care that doctors agree he needs.

If you can help with anything, we would so appreciate it. If you can't help financially, please share this where you can.
