For the past four weeks, a dog on Victor Road in Portsmouth has captured the concern and hearts of an entire community.

His name, as we understand it, is Goer, but all of us on the road have affectionately started calling him Victor — after the street where a group of neighbours came together to help him.

Victor had reportedly been left in the care of someone for what was supposed to be a couple of days. Unfortunately, those responsible for him did not return, leaving someone who was neither prepared nor able to provide the care that Victor needed.

Over the following weeks, neighbours became increasingly concerned about him.

Victor was being kept in a very small courtyard, approximately 3 metres by 3 metres, surrounded by concrete and artificial grass. During extremely warm weather, we witnessed him spending prolonged periods outside, including during the day and at night.

As the weeks went on, we could see his condition deteriorating.

Several neighbours tried repeatedly to seek help through the RSPCA and other animal organisations. Unfortunately, despite everyone's efforts, we were unable to secure the immediate intervention that we felt Victor desperately needed.

Today, things reached breaking point.

In the heat, Victor appeared to be overheating and looked close to collapsing. With access to the communal courtyard through a neighbour, we were able to reach him and immediately began cooling him down.

At that point, as a community, we felt that we simply couldn't watch him deteriorate any further.

After speaking with the person responsible for Victor, agreement was reached for us to take him into our care.

And for the first time in weeks, Victor is out of that courtyard.

He is currently being cared for by neighbours, with access to a garden and a crate safely indoors.

Despite everything, he is an absolutely lovely dog. He has a wonderful temperament and seems incredibly happy simply to have space, attention, company and people around him.

Unfortunately, getting Victor somewhere safe is only the beginning.

We are concerned about several aspects of his health. His right ear appears badly infected and is closing up, he appears to have significant sunburn, and he is dragging his back left leg. He now needs proper veterinary assessment and treatment so that we can understand his condition and give him the care he deserves.

Why we're fundraising

We are raising money as a community to help cover:

An urgent veterinary examination

Treatment for his infected ear

Assessment and treatment of his back leg

Treatment for his skin and apparent sun damage

Medication and any other veterinary treatment he may require

Food and essential supplies while he is in temporary care

Any reasonable costs associated with getting him safely into an appropriate rescue, foster placement or permanent home

Any money raised will be used towards Victor's welfare, treatment and securing his future.

Our ultimate goal is simple:

We want to give Victor a second chance.

The neighbours currently caring for him have dogs and families of their own, so unfortunately none of us can guarantee that we can provide his permanent home. We are therefore also desperately seeking the help of a reputable rescue, shelter, foster carer or suitable experienced home that may be able to take Victor and give him the future he deserves.

What has happened over the last few weeks has also shown something incredibly positive.

A whole street came together for one dog.

Neighbours talked to one another, checked on him, tried to find organisations that could help and, when Victor appeared to be in serious distress, came together to make sure he was safe.

Tonight, instead of being alone in a tiny courtyard, Victor has people around him who care about what happens next.

But we need help to finish what our community has started.

We don't know exactly what Victor's future looks like yet.

VICTOR UPDATE – THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH! ❤️

We honestly cannot thank everyone enough for the incredible generosity and support you have shown Victor. We have now raised almost £450, which is absolutely unbelievable. Every donation, share, message and offer of help has made a genuine difference to this boy.

We have some really positive news to share! ❤️

Today, we found a vet who was willing to see Victor and he had a full consultation. Thankfully, although he has clearly had a very difficult time, he isn't in as bad a state medically as we initially feared.

Victor has now had his worming treatment and has been given painkillers and steroids to help with his badly infected ear and the haematoma that has developed.

We also discovered that Victor is microchipped, but unfortunately the chip was never registered and contains no owner details, so we still don't know his exact age or history. From what we can tell, we believe he is a Pocket Bully-type breed and around 3–4 years old.

He weighed in today at 38.6kg and is overweight, which isn't particularly surprising considering the poor-quality food and complete lack of exercise he had previously been getting.

But the transformation we have already seen is incredible.

Since being rescued, Victor has been getting proper, nutritious, protein-rich food, plenty of good things to eat and even some goat's milk. Today, I also gave him what was probably his first proper bath in a very long time!

The dog that we saw struggling in that tiny courtyard is now trotting around the garden, exploring, interacting with everyone and looking like a completely different dog. At night, he is sleeping safely inside, somewhere warm and comfortable. ❤️

His next big step is on Wednesday at 9am, when he is scheduled to have an operation on his ear. The vet will drain the fluid, treat the infection and repair the ear that has desperately needed attention. After checking his heart and lungs and considering his relatively young age, the vet is happy for him to undergo the procedure and we are hopeful everything will go smoothly.

And finally… perhaps the best news of all. ❤️

We believe we have found Victor a foster family.

If everything goes to plan over tomorrow and Wednesday, Victor will be rehomed with an experienced and loving family who can give him the life he deserves.

Only a short time ago, this dog was living day and night in a tiny courtyard, in the heat, with very little quality of life. Now he's receiving veterinary treatment, eating properly, sleeping safely indoors, enjoying a garden and hopefully about to have a foster family of his own.

Victor is getting his second chance. ❤️

❤️ VICTOR UPDATE – HE’S HOME! ❤️

We have the update that I think everyone has been hoping for…

Victor has had his operation, been given the all-clear, and is now with his new foster family! ❤️

Victor went into the vets for his operation, where his ear was treated and repaired, he was neutered, and the veterinary team were also able to give him a thorough examination while he was under anaesthetic.

I am incredibly happy to report that everything went well.

After his operation, Victor recovered comfortably in an air-conditioned kennel and, following his checks, was well enough to be discharged the very same day. Even better, after everything this poor boy has been through, the vets have confirmed that Victor is generally in good health.

And then came the moment we had all been working towards…

Victor has now gone to his new foster family. ❤️

We have already received photos from his new home and he looks comfortable, relaxed and happy — including doing plenty of very comfortable sleeping! Seeing him settled somewhere safe after everything that has happened over the last few weeks is honestly quite emotional.

When we first found Victor, he was living day and night in a tiny courtyard, struggling in the heat and desperately needing veterinary attention. We didn't know what his future would look like.

Now he has received the veterinary treatment he needed, has been cared for, fed properly, given somewhere safe to recover and, most importantly, has a loving home and a second chance at life.

None of this would have happened without the extraordinary generosity of everyone who has donated, shared Victor's story, offered help, given advice or supported us along the way.

Every single person who contributed has played a part in changing this dog's life.

The money raised will go towards Victor's operation, veterinary costs and the aftercare and rehabilitation he will need following his treatment. We are going to leave the fundraiser open for the time being and continue accepting donations until they naturally come to a standstill, as Victor will still need support during his post-operative recovery and rehabilitation.

We really cannot express how grateful we are for everything people have done.

There is a quote that feels particularly appropriate after everything that has happened:

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Victor's story has shown exactly what can happen when a community refuses to look the other way. A group of neighbours came together because they saw an animal that needed help, and that grew into something much bigger as people donated, shared his story and offered their support.

A whole community came together for one dog — and together, we gave him his second chance. ❤️

We are also currently awaiting the newspaper article telling Victor's story, which will hopefully help shine a light on everything that has happened and the incredible community effort behind his rescue. As soon as the article goes live, I will post the link here for everyone to see.
