If you’ve ever walked past the Trader Joe’s on 14th, you’ve likely seen Ron Dudley wishing you and every other passerby PEACE with his faithful peace sign being displayed by one hand and a stack of StreetSense newspapers along with a pile of his self-published science poems, tucked underneath his other arm. Whether rain or shine, sleet or snow, Ron is out there working hard and helping people have a better day. A few years ago, I struck up a conversation with Ron to get to know him better. I learned that Ron loves what he does, loves greeting people, and loves selling StreetSense, a non-profit newspaper sold by formerly displaced people who buy each copy for 50 cents and then request donations with the recommended amount being $2.00 which they get to profit themselves. Ron takes his job very seriously and rarely ever misses a day. When I acknowledged his hard work and dedication and quite candidly asked why he didn’t try working for Trader Joe’s, he shared his lack of confidence kept him away. He didn’t feel as if he belonged. Fortunately for Ron, and for us, this is not true; Ron very much belongs. He belongs to the community. And now Ron, our very hardworking, kind friend and honest member of this community, needs our help. Unfortunately, Ron’s friend, who he had been staying with for the past several years, is moving out this week, and Ron has nowhere else to go. Few people are as well deserving as Ron. Please help give Ron the confidence and financial support he needs to get back on his feet and into a warm home in time for winter.
