On August 30, 2019, my sister’s life changed forever.

She went into brain surgery for a benign tumour that was causing her to have seizures and pass out. Although the procedure carried only a 10% risk of complications, she woke up unable to move her left leg. To this day, no one knows exactly what caused it but the impact has been profound.

With almost no post-surgical rehabilitation, she began the long, painful journey of teaching herself how to walk again. As a farmer’s wife and mom of two girls, she pushed through the unimaginable. But the physical strain of relearning to walk has caused significant damage to her spine. Over the last couple of years, the deterioration has increased dramatically. Chronic pain has become her daily reality, at times leaving her completely bedridden.

Earlier this year, after an MRI, she received the devastating news:

She needs spinal surgery to replace herniated discs that have caused degenerative disc disease and severe stenosis. But due to the advanced deterioration in her spine, she cannot receive this surgery here in Canada.

A Door Has Opened

By God’s grace, she recently connected with a highly respected clinic in Germany that can perform the surgery she needs on February 5. Instead of fusing the discs, they will replace them, giving her the best chance at restoring movement, reducing pain, and, Lord willing, reclaiming years of life with her family.

This surgery offers hope - real, tangible hope.

If you know my sister, you know her heart. She and her husband are the kind of people who quietly pour out love, time, and generosity to everyone around them. They’ve impacted countless lives over the years. Now, we want to come around them.

They are choosing to keep their family together for this journey, traveling as a family of four to Germany for two weeks so she can undergo surgery and begin the first stage of recovery with her husband and daughters by her side.
