This winter, while delivering packages for UPS, I stumbled across a scene that broke my heart. On a porch, amidst a makeshift shelter for stray cats, I found this tiny kitten in desperate need of help. Right as we locked eyes, I knew I had to save him. With his eye popped out of its socket just laying there. The homeowner assured me he was fine, that he eats, runs, and plays. I instantly disregarded her words; I couldn't ignore his obvious suffering. I knew I had to take action.

After some convincing, the wonderful lady agreed to let me take him. Without hesitation, I scooped him up and tucked him safely inside my sweater. We spent hours driving around in the UPS truck as I prayed his eye wouldn’t pop all over me. As he rubbed and made muffins all over me, I had my heated vest on, and he was loving it, purring the ENTIRE time. He was super calm and not trying to get away, which I was grateful for. But, let me tell you, how BAD his eye smells and having him right under my nose like that... was SUPER nauseating. Nevertheless, we gotta do what we gotta do lol.

Eventually, a friend picked us up from the truck route and took us straight to the vet. (Bless her soul, I don’t know what I would have done without her, due to the fact I don’t drive.) The examination revealed the full extent of his injuries ~ his eye was damaged beyond repair and needs to be removed to prevent further pain and infection. I took him home on antibiotics. We are going to have to wait for his infection to get better before surgery. (Scheduled: 01-07-2026)

Despite his rough start, this kitten is a fighter. He's affectionate, playful, and full of life. I've named him Goober, because, well, I mean... just look at him, haha. Also, he is such a goofball. Most deserving of life. He is so sweet with our other animals (2 rescue dogs & 2 other kitty rescues; one of which was hit by a car with a limp leg when he was a kitten. I saved him from being euthanized at the animal hospital I used to work at. He still has problems himself. Binx is on medication and has his own stack of vet bills lol). Back to the main subject, Goobs, this kitten is amazing, not scared of anything. Such a beautiful soul, so spunky. But Goober’s journey to recovery is just beginning. The surgery to remove his damaged eye and provide him with the necessary aftercare is expensive, and I can't do it alone at this moment.
