Last year I had the privilege of visiting and supporting Dr. Archbishop Kiwanuka Primary School in Mpigi District, Uganda, (which is the international link school for Brunswick Primary School) where around 1,000 children attend, many of whom are orphans who live in dormitories at the school.
During my visit I taught art, PE and games, and spent time reading bedtime stories to the children who live at the school. It was an incredibly special experience and showed me just how joyful, resilient and eager to learn the children are.
However, it also highlighted some of the challenges the school faces. When visiting the dormitories, we discovered that some children were sleeping on the floor because there were not enough beds.
Thanks to the generosity of supporters last year, we were able to provide 21 netball girls with their own beds, giving them a safe and comfortable place to sleep.
However, after counting beds in the other dormitories, we discovered that 41 children are still sleeping without a bed, and some also do not have mosquito nets to protect them while they sleep.
The goal to raise money to provide:
-41 beds for children currently sleeping on the floor
- Mosquito nets to protect them at night
-Sports and playtime equipment
• Each bed costs £80
• Each mosquito net costs £5
fundraising target is £3,500.
Having a bed is not just about comfort. It means children can sleep safely, stay healthier and wake up ready to learn.
If we raise more than our target, any additional funds will be used to buy sports equipment for the school, helping provide opportunities for the 1,000 pupils to play, exercise and enjoy sport.
Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference.
Thank you for helping give these children a safe place to sleep and the chance to thrive.
Thank you
Taryn Blackman
