Help Mamma Giusy breathe!

A persistent, subtle cough. In hindsight, that sound was present every time I called my mother, Giusy. And it was a sound no one paid attention to until just recently.

In June of 2018, Giusy was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer. It was a tragic surprise to everyone. She frequently loses the ability to breathe after 10 minutes of talking, and we thought at most she might have only pneumonia, and (luckily) that’s what prompted her visit to the hospital. The diagnosis was terrible news, but it’s Stage 3, not Stage 4, and so there is still hope.

Giusy is only 51 years old and lives alone in Italy. I decided to move back to Italy to help her as much as I can, and after having spoken with a few oncologists, I also know the medical costs are going to be more than my mother and I can cover on our own.

My mother is such a beautiful person, and although I know we all must leave this earth at some point, I think 51 years old is much too young. There are still so many more joys for my mother to experience, and there are still so many more smiles to adorn her beautiful face.

I’m still talking with doctors and waiting on results from different tests to see how far the cancer has spread, but it’s already evident that Giusy will need radiation therapy, chemotherapy, possibly surgery, and definitely various types of medication and numerous hospital and doctor visits. The goal I set for “Help Giusy Breathe” is 60,000€, but it might be increased as the doctors update me about additional costs.

I’m aware that requests like this depend on the altruism and generosity of the many people I know and of the many whom I don’t know. And I want to thank everyone in advance for caring enough to make this cause their own. Together, we can help Giusy breathe.

Una tosse persistente e subdola che era presente ogni volta che chiamavo mia madre, Giusy. Un suono a cui nessuno ha prestato attenzione fino a poco tempo fa.

Nel giugno del 2018, a Giusy e’ stato diagnosticato un cancro polmonare al terzo stadio avanzato. È stata una tragica sorpresa per tutti.

Spesso lei perdeva la capacità di respirare dopo soli 10 minuti di conversazione, e abbiamo pensato che al massimo potesse avere la polmonite e (fortunatamente) questo è ciò che l’ ha spinta a visitare l'ospedale. La diagnosi e’ stata una notizia terribile, ma è al terzo stadio e non al quarto, e quindi c'è ancora speranza.

Giusy ha solo 51 anni e vive da sola in Italia. Ho deciso di tornare in Italia per aiutarla quanto più posso, e dopo aver parlato con alcuni oncologi, so anche che le spese mediche saranno più di quelle che mia madre ed io possiamo sostenere.

Mia madre è una persona così bella, e anche se so che tutti noi dobbiamo lasciare questa terra ad un certo punto, penso che 51 anni sia troppo presto. Ci sono ancora così tante gioie che mia madre deve vivere, e ci sono ancora così tanti sorrisi che devono adornare il suo bel viso.

Sto ancora parlando con i medici ed aspetto i risultati di altri test per vedere fino a che punto il cancro si è diffuso, ma è già evidente che Giusy avrà bisogno di radioterapia, chemioterapia, forse un intervento chirurgico e sicuramente vari tipi di farmaci e numerose visite ospedaliere. L'obiettivo che ho impostato per “Help Giusy Breathe“ è di €60.000 , ma potrebbe aumentare dopo che i medici mi aggiorneranno sui costi aggiuntivi.

Sono consapevole che richieste come questa dipendono dall'altruismo e dalla generosità delle molte persone che conosco e di molte persone che non conosco. E voglio ringraziare tutti in anticipo per il contributo e per rendere questa la loro causa. Insieme, possiamo aiutare Giusy a respirare.
