My dear friend Giuseppe, a lifelong resident of Naples, Italy, is in urgent need of a second heart valve replacement surgery after complications from a previous operation. Despite Italy’s universal healthcare, he now faces a harsh reality: the only safe path forward is through private care, and the costs are more than his family can bear.

Why This Matters to Me

I met Giuseppe many years ago while traveling through Italy, and we’ve been close ever since. He welcomed me, a stranger at the time, into his home like family. Since then, I’ve shared meals, laughter, and countless memories with him and his children. I last visited and had dinner with them just this past December, and it was like coming home.

Now, I want to return the kindness he’s always shown me by fighting for him when he needs it most.

His Medical Situation

Giuseppe underwent heart surgery for a valve replacement, but the prosthetic valve is being rejected, a rare but serious complication. He now requires urgent reoperation, but wait times in the public system are dangerously long, and the best care is only available out-of-pocket through the private system.

The total estimated cost, including surgery, hospitalization, a new prosthetic valve, and rehabilitation, is €30,000 - €40,000 ($32,000 - $43,000).
