Giovanni is a warrior in every sense of the word. Born 11 weeks premature with a rare genetic mutation of the MYLK gene, Gio’s life has been nothing short of a battle. In the NICU, he contracted meningitis, which severely impacted his lungs, liver, and kidneys. He also has an aortic aneurysm and has been on a trach since birth. Despite these challenges, Gio has fought through every obstacle and is now a happy, smiley 5-year-old who loves Elmo and is learning non-verbal communication.

This winter, Gio’s health has taken a devastating turn. After battling pneumonia three times in the last two months, he is now fighting for his life. Doctors are working tirelessly to control a systemic infection that has put him on life support and ECMO. His condition is the most critical it’s ever been, and these last 48 hours have been the scariest for his family.

Gio’s parents have been by his side around the clock, but this long road to recovery has barely just begun, as things are touch and go. They are indefinitely off work to be there for him, and their days and nights are spent in the hospital.
