Help Gina Hunter Bring Quality STEM Tools to Kids

Tax deductible
Hello, my name is Gina Hunter, a retired teacher with a passion for inspiring young minds through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). My nonprofit program, STEM Learning with Dotty’s Place, is dedicated to supporting students and teachers by bringing hands-on learning experiences to schools and community programs.

Recently, I had the privilege of setting up a nature table at a primary school where I volunteer. It was one of six exciting activities spread throughout their courtyard during lunch. The nature table was a big hit! It featured samples of earth materials, magnifying glasses, loops, and microscopes—tools that encouraged kids to explore and discover the wonders of science up close. Each item was thoughtfully chosen to spark curiosity and learning in a unique way.

That day, I was thrilled to welcome approximately 135 K-3rd grade students over a 2 1/2 hour period. Around 65 children took turns crowding around my nature table during their lunch recess. Their excitement was contagious! Several students even stopped me on their way back to class, asking if I could bring the table again next time.

While the day was a success, I realized my current microscopes were too flimsy to handle such enthusiastic young scientists. To improve future STEM experiences, I set out to find sturdier microscopes that could withstand so many young users. I came across two microscopes at Treasures 4 Teachers in Tucson. When new, these Tasco 601200-4 microscopes are valued at over $100 each. At Treasures 4 Teachers, they are available for just $20 apiece. This is an excellent find for microscopes in this condition. And the best part is that they use mirrors instead of electricity. This will save me from having to recharge and replace batteries or search for a source of electricity.

In addition to the two microscopes, I also found two matching circuit kits that I believe will be an asset for working with my slightly older participants. The kit is called My Home, and it is one of the Snap Circuit products made by ELENCO. Along with teaching about circuitry, it allows students to visualize how electric lines run throughout a house. Treasures 4 Teachers is only asking $15 for each. The cost for it new is $59.95.

While these items may seem small, their impact will be huge. As a retired teacher living on a fixed pension, I cover most of my program costs out of pocket. So, sometimes even $15 feels like a stretch. Your donation, no matter the size, will help me continue creating memorable STEM experiences for young learners and supporting their teachers.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has already donated materials to my program and to those who will help me purchase these new tools. Your generosity will bring joy and discovery to the children I serve—and who knows, maybe even inspire the next scientist, engineer, or inventor.

Thank you for believing in this mission. Together, we can make STEM learning accessible, exciting, and impactful for every child. If you'd like to learn more, visit my website at www.dottysplace.org/
