Help Ginna Fight Cancer Far from Home

Hi, I’m Ginna Niño. I’m from San Gil, Colombia, and I’ve been living in Melbourne, Australia for the past few years.

Right now, I’m facing the toughest challenge of my life.

Not long ago, I was diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer that has already spread to my liver. I had emergency surgery to prevent a blockage in my intestine and now I live with a temporary colostomy. I’m currently hospitalised in Cairns, far from home, far from everything familiar.

The only person by my side is my mum, who travelled from Colombia on a tourist visa. She doesn’t speak English and doesn’t know this country, but she’s here, quietly supporting me with all her love. Beyond her, my support network here in Australia is very limited.

Although I have student health insurance, it only covers part of the medical costs. The rest treatment, medication, transport, accommodation, food, legal and migration advice is up to us.

To make things harder, my visa was recently refused. That means I don’t have access to public healthcare anymore, and my situation is now much more uncertain.

With the help of a few close friends, we’re launching a solidarity campaign to help me continue my treatment and, if needed, return to Colombia safely and with the care and warmth every human deserves.

We need support to cover:

Chemotherapy and cancer medications, over AUD $33,000 per year

Accommodation, food and transport in Cairns, about AUD $3,700 per month

Legal and migration fees to appeal the visa, AUD $5,000

This is more than just about money. It’s about time, hope, and the kindness of not walking this path alone.

Hola, soy Ginna Niño, colombiana de San Gil, Santander, radicada en Melbourne, Australia.

Y esta es, tal vez, la lucha más dura de mi vida.

Hace poco me diagnosticaron cáncer colorrectal avanzado con metástasis en el hígado. Me operaron de urgencia para evitar una obstrucción intestinal, y ahora vivo con una colostomía. Estoy hospitalizada en Cairns, al norte del país… lejos de casa, de mi gente, de mis raíces.

Solo me acompaña mi mamá, quien vino desde Colombia con visa de turista sin saber lo que íbamos a enfrentar. No habla inglés, no conoce este país, pero está aquí, firme a mi lado.

Fuera de ella, mi red humana de apoyo es muy reducida.

Aunque tengo un seguro médico estudiantil, solo cubre una parte de los procedimientos. El resto -tratamientos, medicamentos, traslados, renta, alimentación, asesoría legal y migratoria- corre por nuestra cuenta.

Además, mi visa fue rechazada, lo que complica aún más mi acceso al sistema de salud y mi permanencia legal.

Por eso, con el apoyo de personas cercanas, estamos organizando una campaña solidaria para poder continuar con mi tratamiento y, si es necesario, regresar a Colombia de forma segura y con el calor humano que toda persona merece en esta etapa.

Necesito ayuda para cubrir:

Quimioterapia y medicamentos (más de AUD $33,000 al año)

Alojamiento, alimentación y transporte (AUD $3,700 mensuales approx.)

Honorarios legales y migratorios para apelar la visa (AUD $5,000)

No es solo dinero. Es tiempo de vida, un poco de alivio, y la ternura de no caminar sola.
